On 4th December 2015, a meeting between Jan Mládek, Minister of Industry and Trade and his Slovak counterpart, Minister Vazil Hudák, took place.

The aim of the meeting was to discuss ongoing and planned gas infrastructure projects in Europe and their potential impact on the regional energy security and associated economic impacts.

Minister Mládek said: “Slovak republic has been traditionally our closest partner in the European Union and I personally know Mr. Minister Hudák for several years. We both agree on the need to maintain Ukraine’s transit role as the economically most efficient way of natural gas transmission to Europe, as well as on the long-term interest of both countries on the finalization of the North-South gas corridor and further diversification of routes and territories of sources”. Minister Mládek has, in this context, stressed the future benefits of the implementation of the TANAP gas pipeline, which is the Azerbaijani-Turkish project and which is already under construction.

Meeting was also focused on the economically most efficient option of integration of gas markets in Central Europe. Czech Republic finds the proposal of the Slovak party on possibility to integrate the Czech and Austrian markets by utilizing transmission capacities of the Slovak transmission system without the need of construction of new infrastructure very interesting. Minister Mládek has assured the Slovak party that the project BACI was never intended as an attempt to bypass Slovak Republic and both Ministers have confirmed mutual will to cooperate in the field of transport of natural gas in the region.
